  1. The theme of identity on My Last Duchess prompts an issue on the speaker for he needs external elements to find who is. The possessive pronoun in the title “My” evokes the relationship of elements. His wife has an identity because she has a connection with him and that may be one of the reasons her name is absent. Furthermore, he defines himself for what he has, a place to portrait his deceased wife, a servant that please him in the elaboration of the piece of art, and a place to have other pieces of art. The association between the portrait of the Duchess and the one of Neptune helps the speaker perpetuate his life and stories. Neptune, the god of water in Roman mythology, is a character which glory goes beyond time. Therefore, the speaker puts Neptune and his deceased wife because both of them help him build the way people perceive him. The Duke is speaking to an observer, which identity is unknown, so it can be anybody. This helps to analyze the dependence of the speaker of showing what he has, and then, what he is, to others. He is what he has, and what he knows and he requires the recognition of others to validate his identity.
